Leek RUFC will make an historic trip to Twickenham to play Trowbridge in the national final of the RFU Intermediate Cup.
Leek, who have also secured league promotion, beat Cumbrian side Aspatria in the national semi-finals 27-15 to clinch a place at the home of rugby.
The club is taking 11 coaches of supporters from their home ground, Esterchem Park in Cheddleton.
Director of rugby Neil Edge spoke to StaffsLive about what the game means to the local area.
“To be honest it’s not just the club, it’s the whole town. We’re a little town really.
“When I’m walking through the town people are coming up to me saying it’s fantastic what Leek RUFC has achieved.
“As for the lads, they are going to take it on board, they know they’ve got a big job to do.
“We don’t know how the players are going to react on the day. It’s a huge occasion, a huge stadium, playing at HQ.
“None of them have ever played in front of such a huge crowd. It’s just amazing for them, I hope they do themselves justice.”
Far from this being a good run of luck, Edge said the club had been mapping out its route to success for a while.
“We’ve really worked hard in the last five years. We’ve had a game plan.
“We’ve worked together as a unit and kept the same players together.
“Many players have come through the juniors. A lot came from the Colts about three years ago.”
As for their opponents Trowbridge, Edge said they are concentrating on their own game.
“We haven’t looked too much at what they’re going to be like. We know they are going to be big and strong up front in the pack.
“We know about individuals, we know they have a fullback that’s fast.
“But at the end of the day that guy might not be playing, you can’t run a training session based on a certain pack or player.
“So we will stick to the same game plan we’ve had all season. And if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.”
The final takes place on Sunday (May 4), 3pm kick off.
