A school nurse has been presented with an award after saving a seven-year-old pupil’s life in Leek.
Marcus Tunnicliffe-Grundy received the commendation from the West Midlands Ambulance Service after performing CPR on Thomas Estcourt at Horton Lodge Special School.
His quick actions when the youngster arrived for school in January helped to save his life.
“I quickly assessed Thomas,” Marcus added. “I couldn’t see or hear him breathing and he had no chest movement.
“The second I got into the school I commenced CPR. After three or four minutes, I heard a heartbeat.
“I can’t begin to describe the relief I had when Thomas took his first gasp of air.”
Thomas joined Marcus to receive the award, which was presented by paramedic area support officer Kevin Errington, who was called to the school on the day.
“Without Marcus’ efforts Thomas wouldn’t be here today,” Kevin explained. “His swift actions in starting treatment and alerting the ambulance service ultimately saved Thomas’ life.”
Marcus has worked at the school for four-and-a-half years and believes his actions were all in a day’s work.“I’m humbled to receive this award,” he said. “I just did my job, nothing more, nothing less – I’m just so pleased to see Thomas go from strength to strength.”
